One of our most favorite evergreen plants! They are slower growing but they are tough and very cold hardy! On average they grow 6” to 12” per year. Something very important about these is that they need to be leader trained at a young age, which is not hard to do. When these are allowed to freely grow they will put out multiple leaders (main trunk branch) and then in the future with wind, ice and snow they will split in half because they have multiple weaker leaders instead of one strong one. Sometimes they can recover but typically they stay split and look horrible! While these are young, make sure to cut any competition leaders off and to only leave one vertical leader – very important! Otherwise these bad boys are excellent evergreen plants for smaller areas typically topping out at 12 to 15 foot tall.
